Sunscreen chemicals are hazardous to our health and the environment. After 40 years of use, the incidences of melanoma and skin cancers have continually climbed rather than being reduced as they have been promoted to do. Dr. Plourde presents highlights from her book Sunscreens — Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste. Pervasive use has led to these chemicals now being found in the 97% Americans’ blood streams even in 90% of those who claim to never have used them. The result is that sunscreen chemicals are now found in the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world, leading to plankton and coral death. Potent hormones, mice demonstrate both general and reproductive problems, and fish exposed to them become what researchers term “intersex”, as well as identified to be accumulating in larger species up the food chain. Passing through the blood-brain barrier, as well a through the placenta, they are capable of killing brain cells and causing DNA deletions in mice offspring. The book includes an entire chapter on the antioxidants that have been proven to protect the skin from solar radiation, allowing chemical-free safe time in the sun. This presentation was recorded at the Doctors Symposium at the 2011 Cancer Control Society Convention in Los Angeles. The slides shown were taken from Dr. Plourde’s book: Sunscreens — Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste.

When you lay out in the sun, you tan, you don’t burn. Why? A. As I said in the video, tanning is actually a cellular mutation, specifically with a type of cell called a melanocyte (produce melanin that change color to make that tan color). That cell changing is the mutation, and just because you are tanning and not burning doen’t mean you aren’t harming your skin. There is some truth behind the “base tan” method, as once your skin is tan you are slightly more protected from further sun damage, but the base tan (as I said in the video) is damage itself. Skin burns when the cells are OVEREXPOSED to UVB rays. There is a point when your cells simply cannot process the rays in a way that will produce a tan, and therefor switch into, for simplicity’s purposes, “burn mode” and you turn red. Sunscreen will filter out some of the harmful rays so less hit your skin, therefore you skin will be more likey to stay out of “burn mode” and stay in the melanin producing, tan making mode. :) All skin
